The Assam government has joined hands with Prasar Bharati to produce a documentary series on Lachit Borphukan, the revered Ahom general.

 

The series, consisting of 52 episodes, will be aired on various platforms, including Doordarshan, Akashvani, and Prasar Bharati's digital services.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was inked on Monday in the presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Doordarshan's Director General Kanchan Prasad.

The agreement was formalised by Meenakshi Das Nath, Director of the State Department of Cultural Affairs, and Amit Kumar, Deputy Director General (Content Sourcing) at Prasar Bharati.

Speaking at the occasion, Chief Minister Sarma highlighted the importance of this initiative, marking the first collaboration between the Assam government and Prasar Bharati to bring Lachit Borphukan's legacy to a national audience.

 

"This documentary will serve as a monumental step in placing Lachit on the national map," Sarma remarked, pointing to the growing interest in the Ahom general, as evidenced by a surge in online searches and the availability of literature on his life.

Sarma urged Prasar Bharati to handle the portrayal of Borphukan with care, stressing the need for accuracy and sensitivity in representing Assam's history and culture.

 

"The documentary should honour Lachit Borphukan's legacy without hurting the sentiments of the Assamese people," he cautioned.

 

The series aims to delve deep into the life and military exploits of Lachit Borphukan, particularly his role in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671, where he led the Assamese forces to a historic victory over the Mughals.

 

This battle remains one of the most celebrated acts of resistance in Indian history, showcasing Borphukan's strategic acumen and indomitable courage.
