Since the announcement of General Elections 2024, the cVIGIL app of the Election Commission of India has emerged as a powerful tool for citizens to flag violations of the election code, with over 79,000 complaints received as of Friday.
According to data released by the Election Commission, more than 99% of these complaints have been resolved, with close to 89% resolved within 100 minutes of being reported, indicating the speed and transparency of the cVIGIL app.
The majority of complaints, approximately 73% of the total, are related to illegal hoardings and banners, totaling over 58,500 complaints. More than 1,400 complaints have been received regarding the distribution of money, gifts, and liquor, while approximately 3% of complaints, totaling 2,454, pertain to the defacement of property.
Of the 535 complaints related to the display of firearms and intimidation, 529 have already been resolved. Another 1,000 complaints were reported for campaigning beyond the prohibited period, including the unauthorized use of speakers.
Chief Election Commissioner Shri Rajiv Kumar, in a press conference announcing the General Elections 2024, had urged citizens to remain vigilant and utilize the cVIGIL app to report any violations of the model code of conduct and the distribution of inducements to voters.
The cVIGIL app, described as user-friendly and easy to operate, connects vigilant citizens with the District Control Room, Returning Officer, and Flying Squads Teams, as per EC. Citizens can report incidents of political misconduct within minutes without the need to physically visit the office of the returning officer. Upon sending a complaint through the cVIGIL app, the complainant receives a unique ID to track the complaint on their mobile device.
The cVIGIL app has an automatic geo-tagging feature of reported violations. This geo-tagging feature allows flying squads to pinpoint the precise location of reported violations, while images captured by citizens can serve as evidence in legal proceedings. Additionally, citizens have the option to report complaints anonymously.
