Congress to decide Rae Bareli, Amethi candidates soon

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh addressed the media on Wednesday, shedding light on the imminent decision regarding the candidates for the crucial RaeBareli and Amethi Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh.

Jairam Ramesh says Kharge will soon decide on Amethi and RaeBareli Candidates from Congress.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh addressed the media on Wednesday, shedding light on the imminent decision regarding the candidates for the crucial RaeBareli and Amethi Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh.

Speaking from the AICC headquarters in Delhi, Ramesh assured that party chief Mallikarjun Kharge would soon conclude the selection process, with an official announcement expected within the next 24 to 30 hours.

This development followed a pivotal Central Election Committee (CEC) meeting convened on April 27 to deliberate on the candidates for the remaining constituencies in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

Sources revealed that the UP Congress advocated for the Gandhi family to contest from Amethi and Rae Bareli, leaving the final verdict in the hands of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.

The significance of these seats cannot be overstated, particularly in light of the 2019 elections when Rahul Gandhi suffered defeat to BJP's Smriti Irani in Amethi, a stronghold he had held for 15 years.

Irani, who filed her nomination for the Amethi Lok Sabha seat on Monday, expressed confidence in BJP's leadership, citing developmental initiatives undertaken in Amethi during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's tenure.

As discussions swirl around potential candidatures from Amethi and Rae Bareli, Smriti Irani emphasised her readiness to contest against any opponent. However, she noted that her candidacy required an official challenger to come forward.

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi's bid for re-election from the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency stands as a testament to his enduring political influence.

Having secured a significant victory in Wayanad during the 2019 elections, Gandhi's decision to contest from this region underscores the strategic considerations shaping the Congress' electoral strategy.

Against the backdrop of ongoing election fervour, the Congress has already announced 308 candidates for the multi-phase Lok Sabha election, which commenced on April 19.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the forthcoming announcement regarding the candidates for RaeBareli and Amethi is poised to shape the electoral dynamics in Uttar Pradesh and beyond.
