The Barpeta Road police have apprehended nine individuals involved in a significant mark sheet scam at Gauhati University.

According to authorities, the scam involved illicitly inflating marks on student records through financial transactions.

Addressing the issue in Barpeta, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma cited the seriousness of the situation.

He confirmed that both the Assam Police and the CID are conducting a joint investigation, resulting in the apprehension of eight accused individuals thus far.

The scandal came to light when authorities at Ganeshlal Choudhury College (GLC College) in Barpeta Road discovered discrepancies in the marks of Azizul Haque, a sixth-year undergraduate student.

A case was swiftly registered at the Barpeta Road police station, although initial investigations by district police were reportedly inadequate, leading to Haque's release from custody.

Local media played a pivotal role by bringing the mishandling of the investigation to the Chief Minister's attention.

In response, Dr. Sarma ordered a thorough probe, uncovering the involvement of several university and college staff in the fraudulent activities.

Among those arrested are Krishnan Krishnamurthy from Samastipur, Bihar, employed at Gauhati University, and Shivtosh Mahto, a junior computer assistant at Dhubri Law College.

The arrests were made following coordinated raids by Barpeta and Dhubri police.

The nine accused include Azizul Haque, Krishnan Krishnamurthy, Ismail Hussain of Kalgachia, Alamgir Khan of Amguri, Kalgachia, Moinul Haque of Bordanga, Kalgachia, Hamez Uddin of Nagaon, Aminul Islam, librarian at Langla College, Shivtosh Mahto of Dhubri Law College, and Abul Bacher of Langla Kalgachia.

Cases have been registered against the accused under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, with additional arrests anticipated as the investigation progresses.

Police authorities have refrained from making further comments to the media at this time.
