Amid the ongoing NEET controversy gripping the nation, Gauhati University finds itself embroiled in a scandal involving tampering of marksheets for financial gain.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the arrest of the main accused in what has become a widening probe into systemic malpractice at the university.

During a visit to Barpeta, Chief Minister Sarma expressed deep concern over the extent of irregularities unearthed in the marksheet updating process.

"Our investigation has uncovered serious discrepancies, indicating illicit manipulation of student marks for monetary gratification," he revealed.

Initial findings point to the involvement of university personnel and a management firm entrusted with record-keeping duties, suggesting a complex web of complicity.

The scandal surfaced following the detection of forged marks linked to Azizul Haque, a sixth-year undergraduate student at Ganeshlal Chaudhary College in Barpeta Road.

Chief Minister Sarma assured rigorous efforts to uncover the full scope of the fraud, citing collaboration with law enforcement agencies.

"Education Minister Ranoj Pegu has been briefed on developments and necessary action will be taken," CM Sarma added.

The revelation has sparked widespread concern regarding academic assessments and the oversight mechanisms within Gauhati University.

Authorities are set to meet with the university's Vice Chancellor to escalate efforts in bringing all perpetrators to account.
