Microsoft overtakes Apple as world's most valuable company

In a surprising turn of events, Microsoft has surpassed Apple to claim the title of the world's largest company by market value, marking a significant shift in their longstanding rivalry. This development is attributed to the surge in artificial intelligence, adding a new dimension to the competition between these two major tech giants.

Microsoft's shares saw a 1% rise in early Thursday trading, pushing its market value to $2.87 trillion, just edging ahead of Apple, whose shares experienced a nearly 1% decline. Throughout the morning trading session in New York, the top position exchanged hands multiple times.

The enthusiasm among investors for the emerging wave of generative AI has fueled a notable upswing in Microsoft's shares. The company, a major supporter of OpenAI and the creator of the popular AI-driven chatbot ChatGPT, has been at the forefront of AI adoption.

In contrast, Apple has found itself somewhat on the sidelines of the AI fervour that has propelled Microsoft to the forefront. Microsoft not only backs OpenAI but also serves as a leading cloud hosting provider and has pioneered the deployment of AI chatbots across its search and workplace products.

While Microsoft capitalizes on AI advancements, Apple has faced concerns about weakening iPhone sales, particularly in China, leading to a decline in its stock in the early days of 2024. Wall Street analysts have responded with a series of downgrades for Apple.

The rivalry between these two tech giants dates back to the 1980s when Apple accused Microsoft of copying the "look and feel" of its Macintosh computer software. Although Apple briefly overtook Microsoft in market value in 2010, driven by the success of the iPhone, Microsoft regained the lead during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021.

Apple is now aiming to carve its niche in the AI landscape with the upcoming launch of its Vision Pro headset, heralding a new era of "spatial computing" that relies on advanced 3D graphics and innovative hand gestures for more natural and intuitive interactions. Despite Apple's strides in AI development, Microsoft's cloud services and Nvidia processors, essential for creating advanced AI tools like ChatGPT, continue to enjoy robust demand.

This AI-driven upheaval in the rankings of the world's top companies has also brought Nvidia, a prominent AI chipmaker, close to surpassing Amazon's market capitalization of $1.6 trillion. Additionally, Microsoft and Apple find themselves closely matched in enterprise value, considering the substantial cash reserves held by both companies.
