Spain, Germany, Belgium and Poland are emerging as stable and increasingly important export destinations for Indian goods within the 27-nation European Union, according to data released by the commerce ministry.

Among European markets, Spain has stood out as a high-growth destination for Indian exports during the current financial year. Shipments to Spain rose by more than 56 per cent to USD 4.7 billion during April–November, compared with USD 3 billion in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Spain’s share in India’s total exports increased to 2.4 per cent, marking a gain of 0.5 percentage points, the highest share increase recorded among India’s European trading partners during the period.

Germany, India’s largest export destination within the EU, also recorded steady growth. Exports to Germany rose 9.3 per cent to USD 7.5 billion in April–November this fiscal, from USD 6.8 billion a year earlier.

“With a 2.6 per cent share in India's total exports and a positive share gain of 0.2 percentage points, Germany continues to provide stable demand for Indian products,” an official said.

Exports to Belgium showed modest growth, edging up from USD 4.2 billion to USD 4.4 billion during April–November 2025–26. Shipments to Poland increased 7.6 per cent to USD 1.82 billion, compared with USD 1.69 billion in the same period of the previous financial year.

“Taken together, these trends highlight a nuanced European strategy for India's exports. Rapid growth in Spain, steady expansion in Germany, and resilience in Belgium reflect a balanced export profile combining market diversification from traditional markets and consolidation in mature economies,” the official said.

The outlook for bilateral trade remains positive, with India and the European Union currently negotiating a free trade agreement. Despite global economic uncertainties, trade between the two sides is expected to register healthy growth if the agreement is concluded.

India’s bilateral trade in goods with the EU stood at USD 136.53 billion in 2024–25, with exports valued at USD 75.85 billion and imports at USD 60.68 billion, making the bloc India’s largest trading partner in goods.

The EU accounts for nearly 17 per cent of India’s total exports, while shipments from the bloc to India constitute about 9 per cent of its global exports. Sectors such as ready-made garments, pharmaceuticals, steel, petroleum products and electrical machinery are expected to gain competitiveness in the EU market if the trade pact comes into force.
