MES engineers transformed Leh Air Force Station into a world-class airfield, completing a new high-altitude runway in a record 21 months.

In a significant boost to India’s strategic capabilities, the engineers of the Military Engineering Service (MES) have achieved a monumental feat of engineering by transforming the Leh Air Force Station into a world-class airfield.

Defying the constraints of high-altitude, the engineers completed the new runway in just 21 months.

“From a dusty airstrip in the 1960s to a world-class airfield today, Military Engineering Service (MES) engineers have delivered excellence at Leh Air Force Station, constructing a runway in a record 21 months under extreme cold conditions in rugged high altitude,” wrote the official ‘X’ handle of the Indian Army.

“This remarkable achievement enhances strategic readiness, supports regional development and exemplifies exceptional synergy between the MES, the Indian Air Force and the Union Territory of Ladakh,” the post further read.
