Dr Sharmila Sarkar has been fielded from Bardhaman Purba on Trinamool Congress’s ticket who has been extensively campaigning for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in the locality.
It has been learnt that Dr Sarkar recently attended patients at a free medical camp at Nimdaha in Purbasthali, which is a locality in her parliamentary constituency. She attended several patients, who had assembled to get a free health check-up.
Local residents have, reportedly, praised the efforts of Burdwan Medical College’s TMCP unit for organising the camp in Purbasthali.
People had to travel long distances to reach medical college to get medical aid. And it gets difficult to travel to such a distance in this scorching heat. Hence, the party leaders' effort to organise a health camp where people even got medicines for free is being viewed as a nobel attempt.
Dr Sarkar said, “As a medical practitioner, it is her primary duty to stand by the people. I am a physician first and then a candidate. And every individual has the right to healthcare,” she said.
Since Monday morning, residents queued outside the camp as doctors present at the camp were busy attending to the patients.
A few patients, reportedly, approached Dr Sarkar for counselling sessions on mental health, since Sarkar is a psychiatrist.
Bardhaman Purba Lok Sabha constituency is going to polls on May 13.
