The Biden administration is set to fortify the defenses of American AI against potential threats from China and Russia, sources have revealed.

 

Initial plans suggest implementing safeguards around the most advanced AI models, akin to the core software utilized in artificial intelligence systems like ChatGPT.

 

According to three individuals familiar with the matter, the Commerce Department is contemplating a regulatory initiative aimed at limiting the export of proprietary or closed-source AI models.

 

These models, characterized by their guarded software and the data they are trained on, are currently subject to discussion for tighter control measures.

 

This prospective action would complement previous efforts undertaken over the past two years to impede the export of sophisticated AI chips to China, aiming to curb Beijing's advancements in military-oriented technology.

 

However, regulating this swiftly evolving industry poses a considerable challenge for authorities.

 

While the Commerce Department has refrained from commenting on these developments, the Russian Embassy in Washington has yet to respond to inquiries.

 

Conversely, the Chinese Embassy has criticized the potential move, denouncing it as economic coercion and unilateral bullying. 

 

They assert that China will take necessary measures to safeguard its interests.

 

Presently, there are no barriers preventing major U.S. AI firms such as Microsoft, OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic from distributing their powerful closed-source AI models worldwide without government oversight.

 

Concerns persist among government and private sector researchers regarding the possibility of adversaries exploiting these models for aggressive cyber attacks or the development of potent biological weapons.

 

One source suggests that any new export controls would likely target nations including Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran.
