A 27-year-old woman died after slipping from a hill while trying to escape a bear in a village in Uttarkashi district, officials said.
Panchayat member Akash Negi said the incident took place on Thursday when the woman, identified as Ambika Aswal, had gone to the forest with a group of women to collect grass.
A bear hiding in the bushes suddenly came out, scaring the group. Ambika started running to save herself but slipped and fell down the hill, suffering fatal injuries, Negi said.
The other women managed to escape and rushed back to the village to inform the locals. Villagers later went to the spot, brought back Ambika’s body, and informed the authorities about the incident.
Uttarkashi Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) D.P. Baluni said the range officer had been asked to investigate the matter.
He said if it was confirmed that the woman died because of a bear attack, compensation and other actions would be taken according to government rules.
