Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing an intense cold spell in December despite several forecasts of rain and snowfall, officials said on Sunday. While Srinagar witnessed a slight improvement in the night temperature, many other weather stations across the Kashmir Valley recorded freezing temperatures on Saturday night.
According to the MeT office in Srinagar, the summer capital recorded minus 0.9 degrees Celsius, while Srinagar International Airport recorded minus 3.2 degrees the previous night.
The minimum temperature is expected to rise in the coming days due to cloudy weather conditions during the nighttime.
Additionally, MeT officials said the weather conditions are expected to change from December 8 onwards, as light snowfall in the higher reaches and rainfall in the plains likely in the next 48 hours.
Nearly all weather stations in Kashmir witnessed sub-zero temperatures on Saturday, with the Jammu division being the exception.
Katra district in Jammu remained the warmest place with 9.2 degrees, while South Kashmir’s Pahalgam was the coldest place with minus 4.3 degrees.
Daytime temperatures have stayed relatively moderate across Jammu and Kashmir, while nighttime temperatures plunged below freezing point at most weather stations in the Valley.
In central Kashmir, temperatures remained below freezing point in Budgam and Ganderbal, along with South Kashmir’s Shopian, Kulgam, and Anantnag over the past 24 hours.
Qazigund, known as the gateway to Kashmir, also recorded minus 1.0 degrees, while several weather stations across North Kashmir, including Baramulla, Bandipora, and Kupwara, also recorded a sharp decline in night temperatures.
