The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list is advancing rapidly across West Bengal, with digitisation efforts in full swing. Fresh data released by the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) on Thursday morning has placed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s constituency, Bhabanipur, in sharp focus due to its high number of uncollected voter enumeration forms.
According to the CEO’s office, 41,495 voter forms in South Kolkata’s Bhabanipur Assembly constituency remain uncollected as of this morning. Bhabanipur has a total of 2,06,295 voters, of whom 1,57,521 forms have been digitised, marking 76.36 per cent completion. The remaining uncollectable forms account for 20.11 per cent of the constituency’s entire voter base — a figure considered unusually high for the Chief Minister’s own seat.
Despite this, Bhabanipur is not the worst-affected segment. In Kolkata Port, represented by Kolkata Mayor and state minister Firhad Hakim, the number of uncollectable forms is even higher. Out of 2.43 lakh voters, approximately 52,500 forms could not be collected.
Commission officials state that the high number of uncollected forms across Kolkata includes voters who have died, shifted permanently, appear as duplicates, or could not be traced after repeated attempts. The trend continues throughout the city.
In north Kolkata, which has 15,06,339 voters, 3,46,059 enumeration forms — or 22.97 per cent of the total — remain uncollected. Notably, 1,07,591 voters (7.14 per cent) have been identified as deceased. Experts note that if 3.5 lakh names are eventually removed due to unverifiable records, it could potentially alter electoral dynamics in the region. On average, 50,000 voters per assembly segment in north Kolkata may be removed from the rolls.
The situation in South Kolkata mirrors this pattern. Here, 20 per cent (1,88,790) of voter forms remain uncollected, including 55,971 dead voters, making up 6.17 per cent of the electorate.
The SIR process is ongoing, with form submission continuing until December 11. Election officials say the figures may change further as the revision moves toward completion.
