Dharmarao Baba Atram, the Minister of Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA), informed the state legislative council on Friday that his department intends to issue a directive prohibiting the sale of energy drinks containing high levels of caffeine within a 500-meter radius of schools in the state.

This commitment was made in the Upper House of the state legislature in response to a query raised by independent legislator Satyajeet Tambe during the Question Hour.

"The FDA will soon issue an order banning the sale of energy drinks with high caffeine content within a 500-metre radius of schools in the state. As per the existing rules, caffeine content between 145 ml and 300 ml is allowed in one litre of carbonated or non-carbonated drinks," Atram said.

Council Deputy Chairperson Neelam Gorhe instructed Atram to compile a list of prohibited beverages and share it with FDA officials statewide to ensure the order is effectively enforced.
