A tragic accident at Shyamnagar station late on Saturday night claimed the lives of three people and left another seriously injured after they were hit by a speeding train while crossing a closed rail gate.
The incident occurred around 11 pm during Panchami night on the Sealdah (Main) branch.
“The rail gate near Shyamnagar station was closed and repeated announcements were made over the station microphone warning of the approaching train. Despite these warnings, four individuals attempted to cross the tracks, leading to the fatal accident,” said a railway police officer.
Two of the victims died on the spot, while the remaining two were rushed to a local hospital. One of them, reportedly a local fruit seller, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The fourth person continues to receive treatment in serious condition.
The identities of all victims are yet to be confirmed. The bodies have been sent for autopsy and the Railway Police has launched an investigation into the incident.
Eyewitnesses suggested that the victims may have been on their way to visit the deity on Panchami night. “They got off the train and crossed the tracks from platform no. 2 to platform no. 3, not realising the danger. It was a careless act that tragically ended their lives,” one local said.
Some residents have blamed the Railway Police for inadequate security and precautions during the festive period. “If there had been proper personnel warning commuters, this could have been avoided,” they claimed.
The Railway Police, however, defended their measures. “Announcements and warnings are made repeatedly to prevent such accidents. Unfortunately, a lack of awareness among some people leads to incidents like this. Efforts are underway to identify the victims and contact their families. The entire incident is under investigation,” an official said.
The accident has raised concerns over track safety and vigilance, especially during festival nights when crowds are larger than usual.
